Hi everybody, my name is Magda, I'm 37, and I'm new here. I've been combing the Interwebs, trying to come up with some answers to the eye problems that have been plaguing me for a few years, and I'm hoping somebody can give me some answers on this forum. My basic question is this: is VT likely to help with esophoria? My ophthalmologist told me in no uncertain terms that it was a "bunch of crap", that nothing was going to help me and that I should just go home and learn to live with it. She also said that, while VT sometimes helps people whose eyes turn outwards, it never helps those whose eyes turn in, like mine.

To summarize my problems: a few years ago, I went to an optometrist because my eyes really hurt while using the computer. Instead of giving me a weaker prescription for computer use, he prescribed prism lenses. When I complained that my eyes still hurt, he gave me more prism. I ended up with 4.5 prism in each eye, and was referred to an ophthalmologist because my eyes "ate" the prism. The ophthalmologist said that I had been overminused, and reduced the minus and prism in my prescription. (At this point, I had double vision without prism, which I had never had before.) However, my eyes still hurt while using the computer, which I need to do for my job.

Using various holistic means, including not wearing my glasses, I weaned myself off the prism completely. I'm now fine for close-up work (reading, computer) with weaker glasses, and I don't have double vision in the distance. But, when I wear my distance prescription (for driving, going shopping, basically living life), I get pretty severe eye strain. I'm scared that I'll have to go through life in constant discomfort and pain. Any thoughts?

Dear Magda,
It is too bad that you were advised that your problem is untreatable and that you just need to live with it when that is absolutely (with few exceptions) incorrect information. Your description of problems with "prism correction" is also not unusual. Please go to the COVD website at www.covd.org and click on the doctor locator. Look for an FCOVD Fellow nearest you and you will find help.

Thank you very much for the information, and for giving me some hope that things are not as bleak as all that.
