Dr. Leonard Press wrote in a blog recently about the value of vision therapy.  When faced with committing to a vision therapy monthly payment that would equal that of a really nice car payment, I hesitated for a split second.  My question was whether vision therapy would work for my daughter or were we throwing our money away while I continued to drive a 14-year-old mini van.

I know many parents and adult patients face the same concern and that is why I wrote "Jillian's Story" and continue to be an advocate for vision therapy.  Vision therapy works!  It changes lives for the better!  To me, it is worth every dime and more.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks very much for running with this theme, Robin.  I don't want to monopolize the conversation, as the idea is to hear from parents and patients, but did want to mention that I (and my colleagues) work as hard as we can to mitigate the cost of therapy.  An important option is Care Credit which is a nationally based company that arranges payment plans for healthcare services.  Many parents find beneficial to use this service.

The second point is that insurance coverage should never dictate whether a child receives needed care.  Although health insurance reimbursement for VT varies widely, there are still many carriers that do reimburse for any part of evaluations, progress evaluations or therapy that involves "orthoptics".  In our office for example, even though we are not participating providers, we are very strong advocates for families being reimbursed for what they are eligible.  We attach a label to the claim form which indicates "Payment to Subscriber".

When I sign my children up for weekly piano lessons, I am very aware of the cost. However, I know that the brain development is well worth the investment and that the costs will be recouped in a variety of ways
