Greg Voth replied to Pablo Manzano's discussion Do you control your eye alternation? An additional diffilculty. in the group Adult Strabismic Patients' ForumAs a 59 year old strabismic, reading Susan Barry's book was a revelation. I've had no surgeries, just patching and exercises early on. My mother was told I'd never be a professional. I have a terribly hard time reading and doing close work. As an adolescent, my family seemed to forget about my vision problem, pushing me into sports. First one picked when choosing sides if they didn't know me... last one picked once they saw me play! In school I was miserable and tested very poorly.
After being 'bullied' into the study of architecture by my father (I wanted to go to art school), I acquired a degree in architecture (5 year program... oh, the headaches...) I got my first job, got laid off within 4 months, and set off on a 24 year career as a self-taught illustrator (www.gregvoth.com) and graphic designer. Over the last 13 years, with the decline in use of illustration, I've moved into computer graphics work for film and television. Working on my Macs has been allowed me to do the detail work I couldn't do by hand, though my wife doesn't understand the appeal.
Dr. Len Press just diagnosed me this week after some fascinating test results (he thought I cheated) and will be overseeing my vision therapy. He suggested I join sovoto.com. I can't tell you how happy I am to be here.
It's been over a year since I completed my vision therapy sessions. With my continuing 3D experience, it's becoming harder to tell when I'm NOT seeing in binocular mode.
There are times when I kick into very deep stereo. Interestingly enough, many of those times are after intense graphic design days with the majority of my time spent staring into computer monitors. This activity used to exhaust me and leave me debilitated, so I'm always stunned when intense concentration in the 2D…

I had my final vision therapy progress evaluation on March 5th. VT was a great ride I'll not soon forget... I'm in stereo very often and can put myself in when I'm not with simple exercises... but this isn't about that final eval.
The next day I began taking a prescription for Naproxen to treat inflammation caused by some possible nerve damage in my left arm. Since taking the Naproxen I've been in 3-D constantly. My periphery is so tack sharp that it's been nearly disorienting and so…

I took some time off after VT and am again back up on the horse, doing exercises daily. I feel my eyes are a bit stubborn of late, not moving enough in the sockets, so I'm trying hard not to turn my head when I follow object. I'm working with my swinging ball, following it aptly with my eyes and not my head and am continuing to work with close up depth, using a corrugated cat scratching block with three pencils sticking at various distances, allowing me to change my targets easily. I can X…

If any of your family members would like to speak with me, I'd be willing to talk with them. I can't guarantee that I'd say exactly what you'd like me to say but I can say that I can tell them about my experience with VT at Dr. Press's office.
I am strongly in the plus column. The reason I am willing to speak so confidently is that the VT room is one big room, which is similar to many physical therapy offices. You can't help but be aware of the other patients. Because I went for two different sessions (4 months and 3 months???) several years apart, I got to observe a lot of other patients. I am a really observant person in some ways (and remarkably "blind" in others). But, I can say quite strongly that I was able to see a noticable improvement in many other patients (maybe not "all" but a whole lot of them). The improvements to me (and my family) were well worth the money, effort, "un-fun" side-effects, etc.
If they'd like to talk with me, they could e-mail me directly at pamela.kohn@hotmail.com. Put "VT Reference" in the subject line and I'll return my phone numbers to the person.
Otherwise, I would caution you to be patient with your family. It's hard to believe this all if you haven't heard of it before. I was actually the most skeptical of all of my family members and was quite delighted to be proved wrong.
Good luck!
