About
34 year old strabismic in vision therapy for 15 months to develop binocular vision. This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life! Even living in post-war Bosnia with carcasses of buildings around and landmines was easier than this. But I'm committed to seeing in 3D.

I was born in the former USSR with strabsimus and was sent to a preschool for retarded kids because I looked so different. I had my first surgery to straighten my eyes when I was 3 when I came to the US. That operation left me with a wandering eye. Then at 17, I had another surgery to cosmetically straighten my eyes.

When I read "Stereo Sue" in the New Yorker in 2006, my life literally turned upside down. I had no idea that I saw in 2D. No clue whatsoever. It took me several years before I decided to do vision therapy to develop binocular vision. I've traveled to over 50 countries and lived in 9, this journey into my brain is by far the most difficult one I've ever been on.

How doing vision therapy is like being a spy

I live a double life.

“You’re a spy?”, you ask.

Sometimes I feel like I am spying on another world. My agency is called VT for short.

“VT?”

“Venezuelan Terrorists?”

No, Hugo Chávez isn’t sending me orders from his grave.

“Ventriloquists Troupe?”

I might as well be a ventriloquist. I seem to be speaking of things of another world.

Pakistan has the ISI. The Israelis have the Mossad. Pre-Revolutionary Iran had the Savak. The US has the CIA…

SNOW, in depth

I won't lie and copy Stereo Sue's "First Snowfall" wonder story in 3D. But I have to say that even though I don't see in 3D yet, I was beyond amazed at the snowfall yesterday.

It's been several years since I last saw snow falling. The last time was way before I started VT. So this is for sure my first time seeing snow in more depth and it is incredible. Unlike Sue, I wasn't so dazzled by…

Mighty flies, a sign that VT is working

I was walking in a popular park and was stopped in my tracks by a swarm of flies.

Yes, I am writing about flies again.

They moved upwards in the sunlight as though they were bubbles in a recently opened bottle of sparkling (carbonated) water or champagne.

I was transfixed. I found a tree stump to sit on and stared in awe. Two women walked by, the one with a stroller used her free hand to wave the flies away. I wanted to say to them, "Look at these flies! Isn't it amazing…

Luxottica: Monopolizes the US eye glasses market, overcharges you and neglects strabismics and amblyopes

Some of you may remember my near-death experiences this summer when Sears Optical manipulated my prism glasses prescription by changing my prescription, an act of medical malpractice. Today's 60 Minutes program shows how Luxottica, which owns Lens Crafters, Pearle Vision, Sunglass Hut, Sears Optical, Target Optical and many other US eyewear retailers is skewing the market for eyeglasses and charging up to 20 times of their cost for glasses. Not only does Luxottica not train its…
