LINKS TO REBUTTAL OF PEDIATRICS/OPHTHALMOLOGY JOPS

Hi All,

Several of you have asked me about a direct link to the information in the AOA News August edition addressing the misinformation in the most recent Joint Organizational Policy from the AAP/AAO, implying that optometric VT is of questionable value at best. Here it… Continue

More to Vision Therapy than meets the Eye.

When I am providing vision therapy with a patient, I have over the years practiced how to see the diagnosed vision problem as part of the total human being. Why? It is evident that my clinical interaction, what I say, how I comment on the patient's responses, has a deep impact on how the patient assimilates the experience. I recall in the beginning I thought that training eye movements was to get smoother eye movements. Also, increasing fusion was to build a stronger binocular… Continue

Remember to get the word out that August is National Children's Vision and Learning Month!

COVD has been working hard to get the word out on August's National Childrens Vision and Learning Month. COVD members don't forget to access the media tools for you at www.covd.org. The more we can all do to push this message out, the greater the chance of helping just one more child with a vision-related learning problem obtain the help that they need!

Also, another thought is to set up your own practice blog to keep your message to… Continue

Just a reminder...

I noticed that several of our fine crew have not added a photo or given their full name. I would like to suggest you do so....it makes communication so much more personal....and less computerized! I would also recommend that all docs either use Dr. or a degree after their name as well....

Perception is a reality more than what is real, what we are looking at!

A new perception of life is being called for. What´s going on in this world, is it true, are we perceiving clearly? When we are able to reach this new level of perception, of health, of consciousness and awareness, then obstacles are seen as an opportunity, not the survival view to fight. After 40 years of vision therapy, it is apparent that what we train through the eyes is perception. This is why we see such functional and behavioural changes in our patients. There is an example of this… Continue

Is It Fair To Categorize ADHD and Learning Disabilities as Mental Illnesses?

A fascinating article from the Mayo Clinic published in Pediatrics in November, 2008 has generated some discussion, but much less than I anticipated. The title of the article is "Mental Illness in Young Adults Who Had Strabismus As Children". I believe there is buried treasure here, with all kinds of implications for debates about the over-prescribing of psychotropic medications in childhood and beyond. The conclusion of the paper, in its abstract, reads:

"Children diagnosed as… Continue

Koller Revisited: Support for VT-ODs from ICDL and Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D.

A new book by Stanley Greenspan, "Overcoming ADHD: Helping Your Child Become Calm, Engaged, and Focused - Without A Pill", contains this advice among its conclusions:

"Depending on where you think the problem may be determines which professional you see. If the challenge is in making sense out of what you see and hear, seek professionals who specialize in that area - a developmental optometrist or a speech pathologist."

Dr. Greenspan, Chairman of the Interdisciplinary… Continue

My Rant to LD Blog Online --- Tact Was Not The Point Here, Catharsis Was

http://ldblog.com/2009/07/28/aap-and-aao-on-vision-therapy/

It is wonderful to see the informative posts from several colleagues. Yet I am wondering: Why aren’t there any responses from the LD Blog master, yet alone anyone associated with the flawed Joint Policy Statement? Why have none of the rebuttals of earlier versions of this biased and flawed Policy Statement been addressed in its subsequent re-packagings? Silence or misdirection is a sad commentary when one champions the… Continue
