Why do glasses cost so much?

Developmental, functional, and behavioral optometrists often use spectacles (lenses and prisms) as part of the optometric vision therapy program our patients experience. Making sure our patients wear these glasses is as important as any other aspect of the therapy program we may prescribe. …

Luxottica: Monopolizes the US eye glasses market, overcharges you and neglects strabismics and amblyopes

Some of you may remember my near-death experiences this summer when Sears Optical manipulated my prism glasses prescription by changing my prescription, an act of medical malpractice. Today's 60 Minutes program shows how Luxottica, which owns Lens Crafters, Pearle Vision, Sunglass Hut, Sears Optical, Target Optical and many other US eyewear retailers is skewing the market for eyeglasses and charging up to 20 times of their cost for glasses. Not only does Luxottica not train its…

Amblyopia & Central Scotomas

I decided to turn to Dr Brock in search of an answer to my main question about attainment of stereo vision for an amblyope. (Thank you Sue Barry for making his lecture notes available.) These lecture notes are not easy reading, but I feel I have gained some interesting insights into my condition.

Unfortunately, Dr Brock's definition of amblyopia leaves the amblyope with little hope of attaining good stereovision. On page 35 under the heading 'Ambyopia-A Permanent Visual Disability',…

New member questions

I am a new member of Sovoto and have one general question and some specific questions about vision therapy procedures:

1) Sue Barry was an alternating esotrope and was able to gain stereopsis. I have also recently read the BBC article about the alternating esotrope who spontaneously gained stereopsis after watching a 3D movie. That got me wondering are some strabismic conditions more likely to yield success in gaining stereopsis than others, and in particular can the strabismic…

IMPORTANT: Opticians don't know how to measure PD for strabismics

I am going to cross post this message as it is extremely important for strabismics and for parents of strabismic children seeking prism lenses.

Be extra careful when ordering prism glasses as some opticians have no idea what to do with strabismic patients and may calculate their own pupillary distance (PD) measurement that will not be the same as the developmental optometrist's PD. The difference in the PD measurement…

BBC Future - 3D movies as vision therapy

Hi Sovoto followers,

I just had an article published at BBC future that I thought might interest this group. In fact, it tries to answer some questions that I've seen here recently (such as, how is it that I can see 3D movies even though I'm stereoblind?) It's about a man who was exotropic his whole life and then suddenly acquired stereovision while watching Hugo in 3D.

Anyway, I'm posting here because I expect this forum to have the most informed…

ICO COVDers Sing a AOA National Event

Several COVD doctors and student members participated in the Illinois College of Optometry Choir which opened the American Optometric Association Optometry's Meeting at McCormick Place in Chicago earlier this week by singing the Star Spangled Banner in 4 part harmony. Almost 7,000 Doctors of Optometry, their spouses, optometry students, optometric para-professionals and others registered for this annual event. Many of those who had registered were in attendance during the opening ceremonies…
