What directs our VISION?

"What makes you see through your eyes?

Is it your attentiveness?  Does your brain direct the show?

Looking and seeing deeply is an attribute of Consciousness.

Therefore, it is Consciousness that is needed to explain

the Science of  VISION. It is our consciousness that defines

our way of perceiving.

The joke is, Science has yet to explain…

Fusion training with a twist

I use coloured photographs on the iPad for training fusion as a way to engage the patient more on an emotional level. When they perceive depth, I invite them to talk about the places in their life where they wish to have more depth and fulfilment.  I first published the photos in my book Conscious Seeing  The…

"Medicine’s Great Divide—The View from the Alternative Side" A view by Deepak Chopra M.D.

Having followed Dr. Chopra's views over the years, perhaps in this article, that was published in the Virtual Mentor of the AMA., there is a message for Optometric Vision Therapy.

Is it possible that the Optometric Vision Therapy has the space and time to incorporate a broader perspective of looking at the whole person in a modern way?

What is your impression? Any comments?…

What does the Kaplan EyeCode® bring to Optometric Vision Therapy?

Optometric colleagues ask me why did I embark on holistic approaches to vision therapy?  Is alternative and complementary medicine really part of Optometry, or is this barking up the wrong tree?

My response is most times non-political. My ultimate vision is for my patient. Deliver the most helpful and integrated program of vision therapy that gets to the very cause of their visual discomfort. At first, I used techniques, and methods to accomplish this. It…

Does Optometry have a ‘vision therapy’ blind spot?

Ever since my days as an Optometry student in South Africa, I listened to the ‘war like’ dialogue opinions Optometrists and Ophthalmologists have toward each other. As the saying goes, “It takes two to tango.”  In my life, when things are not going my way, I have two choices. I can point a finger and blame someone else, or point the finger at myself. What are my limiting perceptions? Where am I holding frustration and anger? Is it correct to be a victim of someone else’s ignorance and…

Stepping out of the box called 'Flatland'

Perhaps the Optometric Vision Therapy we provide to our patients is what we see because that is what we know. Imagine there is an integrated upgrade that we yet cannot see because we do not yet know it. This movie called Dr. Quantum - flatland, shows the limitations of our 2 dimensional perceiving. WATCH MOVIE.

Could Horse's eyes hold secrets to human perception and vision therapy?

Internal Affective States Alter Visual Cortical Responses-Deep implications for Vision Therapy.

I posted information on the "Mood Study" as it related to vision. You can read the complete study.

I found the conclusion really interesting:

“Collectively, the present data provide evidence that internal

affective states alter visual cortical responses in a valence-

dependent manner, with positive states increasing and negative

states decreasing the scope of… Continue

Presuppositions for an Integrated Approach to Vision Therapy

Vision care as we have known it is changing. The patient is becoming more knowledgeable, and the providers have access to new technology. The combination of these two variables necessitates a new paradigm of vision care. A method based on science, and yet one that is truly holistic in its depth, is needed. I have been researching such an approach during my clinical work and teaching in Europe. The KaplanEyeCode®-Perception Technology is such a system. The foundation is visual science linked to… Continue

Is Vision Therapy being used enough to help deal with the epidemic of Nearsightedness?

So a report on a NEI study proudly announces that ‘Nearsightedness’ is on the increase from 25 percent in the 1970’s to a staggering 41 percent this year.” What else is new? We saw similar statistics in the Far East years ago.

Although the study did not deal with the causes, genetics was cited. What caught my attention was the word… Continue

What do I say to Myopic patient interested in lowering their diopters?

Don’t know about you, but in my practice there are more and more

Myopic patients asking for ways to improve their vision! Since my

focus is integrated vision therapy, instead of Ortho K and refractive

surgery, I encourage them to see their nearsightedness not as a

problem, but more as a reflection of a perceptual ‘Mental’ attitude.

They are encouraged to spend time being inside of… Continue

What do I see when I look at a VT Patient's Problem?

As a clinician trained in visual science, I was heavily conditioned to look at an eye problem in a diagnostic way. Later, with coaching from Behavioural Optometric colleagues, I learned to convert the visual diagnostic terms into behaviours. In this way, patients better understood the value of participating in a Vision Therapy program. After the VT program, they would behave differently in their lives. That was a great step in more effectively describing the benefits of the time… Continue

A happy person writes about vision therapy

More to Vision Therapy than meets the Eye.

When I am providing vision therapy with a patient, I have over the years practiced how to see the diagnosed vision problem as part of the total human being. Why? It is evident that my clinical interaction, what I say, how I comment on the patient's responses, has a deep impact on how the patient assimilates the experience. I recall in the beginning I thought that training eye movements was to get smoother eye movements. Also, increasing fusion was to build a stronger binocular… Continue
