Good news! I am a candidate for VT. I have two quesions...

Hi,  I went for my second assessment for VT yesterday.  My amblyopic (right) eye is at 20/200.  My optometrist thinks I can improve this acuity to 20/70 at minimum and then we can work on the convergence.  She says I may need a prism lens.

That said, in order to work on my acuity she suggests occlusion therapy for 2 hours per day for a month after which we can evaluate the progress.  She suggests video games such as Tetris.  I am wondering is their another option I can add to this - both in terms of video games and otherwise?

I am also wondering can anyone tell me - from their personal experience - how long it took for them to improve their acuity?

Hi Lynn,  That's great news.

If you are anywhere near Berkeley you may want to check out some research that's being done at at the UCB school of Optometry.  I worked there as a research subject for a while and was amazed by what one of the researchers was doing with amblyopic subjects using exercises rather than occlusion.  The time needed for improvement depends a lot on how much time you can put in there.

His techniques won't be publicly available for a while yet since he's still collecting data.  (You gotta make sure your results are consistent before you even publish, let alone make what you've developed available to the general public.)  Note:  Although this is research, the risks are minimal.  I'm pretty sure the contract I signed listed only two: "eye strain" and "tedious."

Anyway, if you (or anyone else here) is interested, even just intellectually, I can go into more detail. (Except for any of the specifics of the techniques/exercises.)

In any case, Good Luck with your therapy Lynn!
