Millions of children and adults suffer unnecessarily from binocular vision disorders because they're underdiagnosed. Rectify this by following these four steps.

Please send this link out to all non-Peds/BV docs....hopefully they will start diagnosing and referring patients so that they can receive the best help available.

Robert....ahh yes, now I remember "the duck". Ophthalmology really hasn't changed a whole lot from then have they?

Well...I had flashbacks to the "Ophthalmology Management" cover article about 12 years ago titled "Is Vision Therapy Quackery" with a big rubber duck on the cover. Regardless of the article's content, the cover was extremely insulting and damaging. Jeff Cooper followed up with a great JBO article on "deflating the duck". As a result, I always am pleased to see positive articles like yours in non-VT publications.

I just received my copy of Optom. Management and it was refreshing to see the Red/greens on the cover. Much better than seeing a duck (you younger guys may need to ask us oldtimers about that one). Great job, Dom! We need more articles like that one for those outside our circle to see.
Happy New Year to All!

Dan et al.

Dan....Thank you for your kind comments.

It is now time to go beyond telling ourselves that what we do is an essential part of the practice of optometry. It is time to tell the whole profession that this is NOT an option. In a few months I may be able to give you some legal reasons why ignoring binocular vision dysfunction could be detrimental to the primary care practitioner as well.

It is now time to reach beyond those who already know the value of what we do....I stand in awe of folks like Dr. Len Press who is constantly reaching out to all....docs, moms, blogs, the news media...and tells 'em the importance of what we do AND why it is important to them!

Dan and several others have been very active in the bloggosphere telling all what we do....setting misconceptions right, and in general getting the word out.

I would ask all...become ambassadors for BV and OVT. Don't get mad at those who scoff....use the science to support what we do...tell our story...but always under promise and over deliver. We will once again make the diagnosis and treatment of BV disorders important enough to teach ALL our students, important enough for ALL ODs to diagnose and important enough for the docs to make good referrals.

My complements to Dr. Maino on this article published in December 2009 Optometric Management. He has done an excellent job of articulating the reason why it is critically important for primary care ODs to look for binocular vision problems as a routine in the ophthalmic examination of their patients. This article is loaded with helpful advise including a sample history form and table of specific BV disorders. The key point is doctor must recognize and manage these patients. If the clinician is not able to treat the patient then a referral is essential. Ignoring (monitoring) is not accepatble!

Thank you Dom for another excellent paper!
