I am a new member of Sovoto and have one general question and some specific questions about vision therapy procedures:

1) Sue Barry was an alternating esotrope and was able to gain stereopsis. I have also recently read the BBC article about the alternating esotrope who spontaneously gained stereopsis after watching a 3D movie. That got me wondering are some strabismic conditions more likely to yield success in gaining stereopsis than others, and in particular can the strabismic amblyope hope to be as successful as the non-amblyope?

Is anyone aware of any studies that have considered this question? I myself am amblyopic. How often is an amblyope able to gain stereopsis? If the eyes cannot achieve matching clarity even with the use of prescription lenses then won't that make it all the more difficult to achieve stereopsis. I know there have been cases where a lazy eye suddenly gains clarity if the stronger eye is injured, but has there been documented success where the lazy eye was able to make sufficient improvement  alongside the better seeing eye for good stereoscopic vision to be achieved?

2)I had to prematurely finish a course of Vision Therapy treatment that was underway when my family and I expatriated out of the US to Eastern Europe nine years ago. I have recently started to work on Vision Therapy exercises again at home. I have questions about the materials I have, the results I get and the method of use:

a) Brock String
RESULTS: I have been making good gains converging onto the green bead at closer and closer distances and the hypertropic effect has greatly lessened, but I am still finding focusing on the most distant bead difficult, and I still tend to suppress the image of the the string behind the furthest bead as seen with the left eye. These I feel can be improved with practice, BUT I have a problem that I don't know how to address: The whole cross is displaced to the right with the string image from the right eye seeming to emanate from my nose and that from the left eye more from the right side of my face and beyond depending on the position of the bead. (I have always felt that in my general field of vision I have an image of the right side of my nose.)
QUESTION: Does anyone have suggestions how to bring the string into a more symmetrical alignment?

b) Red-Green glasses with a red-green bar reader placed an a translucent blind (no tranaglyphs to work with), a distance bingo chart on the same blind, some near bingo charts, plus red and green text on the computer
RESULTS: Red -green reading card-only brief flashes of faint red if I make small  head movements. Distance bingo card-left eye suppression beyond about 2 feet. Also difficult not to suppress within 2 foot range. Near bingo cards-no suppression. Red green text: Total red suppression of adjacent words. Intermittent red suppression of adjacent sentences. Can usually maintain red text when in a separate paragraph

c) Polarizing glasses that I use to view my own image in the mirror
RESULT: Left eye seen as being lower, enlarged and blurred
QUESTION: Any ideas for other uses of polarizing glasses?(no tranaglyphs to work with)

d) Overlapping pictures
RESULTS: No fusion possible with prescribed method of use, but if I bring the face to my nose, I get the fused image. I then see how far I can pull it away from my nose and still maintain the fused image--probably about 3 inches is the maximum distance so far. Minimal success fusing traffic light or other images.

e) Aperture rule
RESULTS: Minimal success with either diverging or converging exercises

f) Mirror and Ball (Using an angled mirror held close to nose in order to have different views for each eye
RESULT: Fusion-ball superimposed onto different backgrounds. Can achieve these with  either eye viewing the ball, but easier with the right eye
BUT If I perform the exercise of looking through a tube of paper with one eye and my hand with the other eye, I can get the hole in the hand when my left eye looks through the paper tube, but not with my right eye looking through.

QUESTION: Any suggestions for other activities or different techniques to try with any of these materials would be appreciated.

I have located a Vision Therapist in the Bozeman, MT where I will be visiting in December. At that time I hope to get a new evaluation, but I will be there too short a time to begin a new program.
